A young man is taking an exam

Andrew Coombe is Managing Director of , a partnership between 尤物视频 and AQA. 尤物视频AQA’s globally recognized International GCSEs and A-level qualifications blend subject knowledge with critical thinking to encourage curiosity, independent thinking, and a deeper understanding of the world. 尤物视频AQA qualifications are part of the – a whole school programme for students aged 2-19 that provides curriculum, assessment, and qualifications, and aims to develop the skills and attitudes needed to face the future with confidence.

Here, we talk to Andrew about how the latest 尤物视频AQA exam series has gone and what he’s looking forward to in the months ahead.

Looking back on the most recent exam series, how would you describe the experience for 尤物视频AQA and the schools you work with?

We were delighted to see students achieve strong results in their International GCSE and A-levels again this year. Every student can be proud of what they have accomplished. We know the dedication, resilience, and hard work that exam success demands, not only from students but also from their teachers and school communities.

We received exam entries in more countries than ever before, including Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka for the first time. This reflects the growing reach of our qualifications. We saw another year of double-digit growth in the number of entries, with particularly strong growth in entries for our International GCSE Psychology and across our English portfolio of qualifications.

Andrew Coombe, Managing Director of 尤物视频AQA

While there was much to celebrate, this year’s exam series also brought significant challenges. Ongoing instability in parts of the Middle East and Gulf regions meant that exams could not take place in some countries, which could have prevented students who had worked tirelessly in preparation from receiving the results they needed to progress. Our priority throughout was to ensure that students and staff at both 尤物视频AQA and AQA centres were supported, and we worked closely with them to ensure all students who needed them were able to receive the GCSE and A-level qualifications through alternative routes. Throughout this difficult period, our commitment to supporting our schools and students remained unwavering.

What were schools in the Gulf and Middle East telling you they needed this year, and how did 尤物视频AQA respond?

With the cancellation of the May/June exams, schools in the Middle East and Gulf regions were clear about their priority: ensuring that students could receive their听qualifications despite being unable to sit exams.听Without this solution, some students would not have been able to take up university places and would have been forced to take their exams in the next series.

尤物视频AQA worked quickly to provide alternative routes to certification for affected students, while keeping schools informed with clear,听timely听and consistent communication. Our focus was on giving schools the information and support they needed to make confident decisions during a highly uncertain period.听

I am particularly grateful to our colleagues based听in听the region, who worked tirelessly to support schools and answer questions听throughout. Their dedication, alongside the efforts of teams across 尤物视频AQA听and AQA, helped ensure that results were delivered on time and that schools received the support they needed every step of the way.听

I’m proud of how our teams responded to these challenges, always keeping the needs of students and schools at the centre of every decision.

How do you see the needs of international schools changing, and how is 尤物视频AQA responding to those changes?

The future our students will inherit is full of opportunity, but also constant change. Alongside strong subject knowledge, young people need the skills, confidence, and adaptability to succeed in a rapidly evolving world.

That is why, together with 尤物视频, we developed the : a whole school programme for learners aged 2-19 that combines curriculum, qualifications, and skills development to help students thrive in school and beyond.

We are seeing growing demand for qualifications that reflect the changing world around us. In response, we are introducing several new and revised International GCSE and A-level qualifications, including our first听. Building on traditional ICT, it develops the creative and technical skills students need to engage confidently with emerging technologies, including AI.

Listening to feedback from schools has also shaped a range of practical improvements. These include an听additional听International EPQ submission window, earlier International GCSE and A-level results from next July, and a new October/November International A-level exam series from 2028. Together, these changes will provide greater flexibility for schools and students, while helping learners make more informed decisions about their future education and career pathways.听

As the needs of international schools continue to evolve, we remain committed to providing relevant, rigorous qualifications and responsive solutions that help students achieve their ambitions.

What are you most looking forward to in the year ahead?听

This year marks the first teaching of several new 尤物视频AQA qualifications, including our innovative, project-based learning听International GCSE in听. Project-based learning is at the heart of the 尤物视频 International Programme, developing real-world skills through active, enquiry-based learning. The International GCSE leads on from the 尤物视频 International Curriculum for Global Skills Projects at primary and lower secondary, enabling students to develop valuable skills such as planning, research, and report writing, while exploring real-world challenges through a strong focus on sustainability. We are already seeing significant interest from schools around the world, and it is particularly rewarding to see our partnership with continue to flourish in supporting curriculum delivery.

As听the interest in听尤物视频AQA听qualifications听continues to grow, I am excited听that听飞别鈥檒濒听be听reaching more students in more countries than ever before.听The introduction of an October/November International A-level exam series from 2028 will create greater flexibility and opportunity for听schools, particularly in regions such as Southern Africa, and I look forward to engaging with school leaders there in the coming months.听

Looking ahead听to later in 2027,听飞别鈥檒濒听be holding our first听听This is taking place at the Schwarzman Centre for Humanities at the University of 尤物视频 in September 2027.听滨鈥檓 looking forward to bringing together school leaders from around the world to connect, exchange ideas, and meet with us in person here in 尤物视频.听

Most of all, I am excited about continuing to support schools with qualifications that prepare young people for success in higher education, the workplace, and an increasingly interconnected world.

Recently, our 尤物视频 Revise team worked with expert practitioners from to deliver dynamic, performance-based GCSE revision workshops to bring Shakespeare to life and boost student confidence.

Over 450 schools across England entered a competition to win one of these bespoke workshops, designed to make Shakespeare and revision more accessible. 11 schools were selected as winners and received a tailored workshop, 尤物视频 Revise goodie bags, and study resources.

Becki Bradshaw

Head of Revision and Test Practice

“We are delighted to work with Shakespeare’s Globe to make revision more accessible and bring English Literature set texts to life through these interactive workshops. We know how daunting revision can be, and together with the expert practitioners at Shakespeare’s Globe and 尤物视频 Revise’s three-step approach, we hope that students will be able to sit their mock and future exams with confidence.”

Our award-winning revision guides aim to give learners the knowledge and confidence they need to sit their exams across Key Stage 3, GCSE, and A Levels. To achieve this, we have combined the experience of our subject and revision experts with research-backed cognitive science strategies.

The workshops were built around the three pillars of 尤物视频 Revise: Knowledge, Retrieval, and Practice. Students took part in activities, such as choral pairing and retrieval practice, all aimed at boosting confidence and refining their exam technique.

Led by experts from Shakespeare’s Globe, the sessions explored听Macbeth and听Romeo and Juliet鈥set texts on the GCSE English Literature syllabus in the UK鈥攖hrough the lens of performance and equipped students with practical strategies to strengthen their revision.

Jo Dovey, English MAT Lead at King Edward VI Academy Trust Birmingham, said:

鈥淭he Shakespeare’s Globe workshop was an opportunity for pupils to actively engage with the text by considering Shakespeare’s choices through practical activities. Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the session because it allowed them to explore the text in听a different way听and really think about the impact of Shakespeare鈥檚 use of language and structure.鈥鈥听

Charlie Withers, Senior Learning Manager at Shakespeare’s Globe, said:

鈥淲e are proud to work with OUP to deliver these sessions to schools across the UK. We feel this is a powerful combination: our drama-focused approach brings Shakespeare’s plays to life for young people in a way that is truly memorable, while the cognitive science which underpins 尤物视频 Revise provides students with tools to听consolidate听their learning over the long-term. We are delighted with the initial response to these sessions and can’t wait to hear from students and teachers about the long-term impact of this partnership later in the school year.”听

At 尤物视频, we share the University of 尤物视频鈥檚 mission to further excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide. It鈥檚 important that we maximize the impact and reach of our research content, and that extends to how we support equitable access in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). 听

To close that gap and help institutions access our content, we are proud to be a publisher partner of Research4Life.

Research4Life provides institutions in LMICs with free or heavily reduced rate online access to academic and professional peer-reviewed content, alongside research capacity development through an active programme, helping to bridge the knowledge gap and support sustainable development. This is crucial, as their鈥鈥痜ound that, while 85% of the world鈥檚 population reside in LMICs, only 0.2% of research comes from those same regions.听

Through this partnership, and our dedicated鈥,鈥痳esearchers in eligible countries benefit from free or reduced rate access to our academic journals and online products. This applies to over鈥10,000 institutions in 100 countries either directly or through our partnerships with Research4Life and EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries).

We recently hosted the Research4Life General Partners Meeting to explore how the partnership can collectively advance equity in research throughout LMICs. Held over several days in 尤物视频, the meeting served as a platform for collaboration, learning, and action.

Here, we reaffirmed our commitment to reducing inequalities in access to knowledge and heard directly from user representatives, Country Connectors, and partners about the challenges they face, the impact 迟丑别测鈥檝别 made, and the opportunities ahead.

Discussions ranged from inclusive publishing and local content development to calls for sustainable funding and policy alignment鈥攈颈驳丑濒颈驳丑迟颈苍驳 the transformative power of equitable access. It was a timely reminder that, while access is essential, true equity requires empowerment, visibility, and long-term investment. We were proud to host this global community and help shape the future of inclusive research.

Graham Grant, Director of Technical Sales & Delivery for EMEA and APAC within our Academic division, is also Co-Chair of Research4Life鈥檚 Eligibility Committee and a member of their Executive Council. He shared:听

鈥淎t OUP, our mission is to support excellence in research and education by publishing worldwide. But excellence cannot thrive without equity. That鈥檚 why our partnership with Research4Life is so vital in bridging the gap between access and participation in global research across LMICs.

Through its work, Research4Life have increased research output in LMICs by up to 75%. They empower researchers not just to consume knowledge, but to create it, as authors, editors, and leaders in their fields. Having served on its committees, I鈥檝e seen first-hand the passion, commitment, and collaboration that drive this mission forward. It鈥檚 a privilege to contribute to a community that is reshaping the global research landscape for the better.鈥听

Lise McLeod, Chair of the Research4Life Executive Council, said:听

鈥淭he 2025 General Partners Meeting and Conference helped us reflect on what equity really means in practice鈥攏ot just widening access but ensuring researchers everywhere can participate fully. It was encouraging to see how far Research4Life has come鈥攁nd how committed the community is to the journey towards inclusion and capacity-building.鈥听

As part of our LMIC programme at OUP, we also support open access article processing charge (APC) , enabling eligible researchers to publish their work open access in our journals without financial barriers.

Beginning in August 2025 we have extended this programme, and we now provide authors in 91 countries with a full waiver of open access charges, and authors from a further 38 countries with discounts of up to 75%.

Changing Young Lives Foundation provides free educational and holistic development resources to children in need, offering them an opportunity to change their lives. As we share the same vision in education, we donated books to the foundation for the library corner in their new community centre, allowing hundreds of children from nearby neighbourhoods to enjoy 尤物视频 every day. Our colleagues also volunteered for a storytelling session at the centre in August, teaching children English and engaging them in craft activities.听

Additionally, we donated 200 packs of books to The Hub Hong Kong, which provides opportunities to disadvantaged children through providing the tools and supportive environment for development. Over a hundred beneficiaries received the books for their summer holiday, enriching their learning experiences.听

We are proud to have supported with their donation of 25,000 brand-new books to libraries across Ukraine, as part of PEN Ukraine鈥檚 鈥樷 project.

Since Russia鈥檚 invasion in February 2022, Ukraine鈥檚 library network has suffered systematic heavy bombardments. Tetyana Teren, Executive Director of PEN Ukraine, says that “libraries have lost over 187 million books. But even in such circumstances, society demonstrates unity and resilience.”

Working with our longstanding charity partner Book Aid International, we have provided a financial donation to support the shipment of the books, which was dispatched from London on 7 November. All of the books have been donated by leading UK publishers and selected to provide opportunities to learn English, read for pleasure, and find respite in libraries.

Commenting on the donation, our CEO Nigel Portwood said:

鈥淲e are proud to support Book Aid International, sharing the belief that books have the power to transform people鈥檚 lives and unlock opportunities. Having seen the impact of Book Aid International鈥檚 work over many years now, we know that this initiative with PEN Ukraine will make a real difference to those who have faced immeasurable challenges as a result of the war.鈥

The shipment is due to reach Kyiv later in November. From there, will distribute books to libraries across Ukraine, including to frontline and liberated territories.

I would like to warmly thank Hachette UK, OUP, and other publishers who have supported this shipment and all the publishers who donate books to support all the work we do.鈥

Tetyana Teren spoke more on the ‘Unbreakable Libraries’ initiative:

鈥淥ur joint initiative together with Book Aid International, PEN International, English PEN and leading publishing houses received a big response in Ukraine. Just in the first days after the project announcement, over 300 libraries from different parts of Ukraine sent us book requests. It emphasizes the importance of the project for the entire country. And I want to thank everyone who makes this initiative possible.鈥

In August, our Mainland China team hosted our latest partner conference – 尤物视频 Day 2023 – in Shanghai, after a four year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Over 100 of our partners and industrial players gathered together to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the education industry in China.

Rui Ding, Managing Director, opened the conference with a keynote speech titled ‘Reading: The Starting Point for Children’s Learning in the New Era’, and explained why 尤物视频 is still the starting point for children growing up in a time with rapid technological and social change. He pointed out that 尤物视频 can nurture children’s curiosity, imagination, and creativity, as well as their ability to judge and focus, empowering them to face the future with confidence.

Rui said that “尤物视频” is not only about 尤物视频 words, pictures, books or films, but also about experiences, and that 尤物视频 and experiences should go hand in hand. In China, we hope to work with our partners to create a diverse array of products that meet the needs of Chinese learners and enrich the learning experience, encouraging them to read nature, humanities, and science, and read to a brighter future.

Evolving needs of young learners

In the morning session, Helen Sun, Chief Content Officer, provided a comprehensive overview of our content strategy and latest developments. She emphasized that, in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), children’s creativity remains unparalleled and irreplaceable, and it is our responsibility to safeguard and nurture their imagination.

Felix Zhao, Senior Academic Manager, shared insights on learners’ evolving habits, needs, and learning environments, and how we are using these findings to ensure we give them high-quality resources which will help to address their challenges when learning.

Learning through stories

Ivy Zhu, Director of Content Development for Local Strategic Programmes, and Marsha Hua, Content Development Consultant, elaborated on our local content product for China and Hong Kong, the (TAO). Based on the principle of “Learning through stories”, the TAO series is the latest children’s encyclopedia series that integrates knowledge points into engaging stories to provide learning experiences for children. With over 1,000 captivating stories, the TAO series covers pre-school and primary school levels, enabling children to independently learn about China and subjects such as world culture, English, science, and economics.

Six lively parallel panel discussions took place in the afternoon of 尤物视频 Day, during which colleagues and guests debated topics such as well-rounded education, integrated and digital content solutions, and new media sales channels – concluding a successful 尤物视频 Day for 2023.
